Tight end Geoff Swaim is expected to have surgery this week for a pectoral injury suffered in Sunday’s win over the Steelers, Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett said.
Swaim, a second-year veteran, has six catches for 69 yards this season, but his biggest impact has been blocking for the Cowboys’ top-ranked running game. He entered the game playing nearly 35 percent of the offensive snaps.
After moving up the Cowboys’ depth chart in 2015, Geoff Swaim is going into his second year in the nfl with an opportunity to follow one of the greatest Cowboys tight ends of all time.
There’s an unfortunate reason rookie tight end Geoff Swaim is moving up the depth chart this week.
Gavin Escobar tore his Achilles tendon on the final drive of last Saturday’s 19-16 loss to the Jets and is expected to be placed on injured reserve. He tweeted Tuesday that surgery to repair the injury went well. Add tight end James Hanna to the list of Cowboys free agents who are returning Dallas next season.

Will never question Gavin Escobar’s toughness in the way that he fought back from his Achilles injury he suffered in 2015 to be ready for the 2016 season. His work ethic and commitment was impressive. I have always believed this about Escobar – he was drafted to be a 12 personnel tight end when the team was moving into more 11 personnel sets. Where the front office missed the boat on him was in his development. He never was going to cheap nfl jerseys be quick enough, strong enough or physical enough to play. The heart and determination was there but the overall skill set wasn’t. His hands are rare but that’s really it. As much as he tried to get stronger, he just couldn’t add enough bulk to become a similar player to his teammates that are used at the point of attack. Guys like James Hanna and Geoff Swaim became more reliable players in those situations. The front office will move along as should the player.
“Fourteen years in the NFL you’re going to learn a few things and he’s honestly mastered it,” Swaim said. “I don’t think there’s a tight end on this roster that doesn’t model some part of their game after Witten.
He just does things the right way, off the field and on the field. That’s something I really look for in a guy that I look up to.”
The Texas ex has a specific strategy to ensure that he doesn’t regress in his development. He takes the practice field everyday with one thing in mind, such as his footwork, that he wants to really focus on and he moves on to something else the next day.
Rough night for Andy Jones and his attempt to make this squad. The coaches are trying to put him in position to make plays, whether it is at receiver or on special teams — and he drew a blank. To be targeted three times and only come up with one catch is not where he needs to be. Jones also had a chance to play as a flyer on the outside for the punt team and missed a tackle that resulted in a sizable gain, as well.

What has been impressive about Andy Jones has been his ability to carry those positive days from OTAs and minicamps to what we have seen on the practice fields here in Oxnard. You get the feeling that the more he continues to show as a wide receiver with his playing making ability, the more this coaching staff has been willing to put him on the field. Physically Jones looks the part of an NFL wide receiver. There is some stoutness to his build — a rugged type of a player. Mentally, he appears to be picking up the game well — it doesn’t appear too big or overwhelming. He doesn’t bust routes or make route mistakes from what I have seen. The quarterbacks have relied on him to make plays. They’re not afraid to deliver the ball to him even when he appears covered. What I have also noticed about Jones’ game is that he has taken to coaching well. The technique work and drills have helped him find more separation in his routes, where before that wasn’t the case. Andy Jones needs to find a way to finish what he has started and make this front office and coaching put him on this team.
Despite that fumble in team period, Andy Jones continues to do things to get himself noticed in a good way during practice. Jones has been getting looks with the first offense in multiple receiver sets. He had a nice curl on Brandon Carr where Romo delivered the ball before he even had a chance to turn. It was a pretty catch of a ball right on the money.
