The Dallas Cowboys have the best record in the NFC. They boast an all-world offensive line, a dynamic duo of rookie skill players, an efficient offense and a surprisingly effective defense. They won 11-straight games en route to a division title and the No. 1 seed.
You know all of this. If you’re reading this site, you follow the team intimately. You were following along in training camp and the preseason. The chances are pretty good that you watched Dak Prescott play three preseason games before he ever took a snap against the New York Giants on Sept. 11.
The addition of McCain fills the 10-man practice squad for the time being. The Cowboys are currently carrying six of their roster cuts from training camp, as well as four new signees – McCain, defensive end Zach Moore, offensive tackle Keavon Milton and linebacker Jeremiah George.
My gosh, the guy led the Cowboys with 173 tackles, and 12 of those for losses, about as beneficial as sacks, no. He led a no-name defense given the most humble of names by defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli, “The Mighty Orphans” after the book written about the football team at the Masonic Home in Fort Worth back during the Depression years. This Cowboys presumed rag-tag bunch ended up fifth in points against, first in run defense and good enough to hold 11 teams to no more than 21 points.

Well, Lee received his just due on Friday, voted to the Associated Press 2016 NFL All-Pro team, considered by the players a much more prestigious honor. He hasn’t taken a single rep, and he isn’t going to for the authentic cheap nfl jerseys foreseeable future. But Jaylon Smith stands off to the side as a tantalizing reminder of what the future could hold.
While the rest of the Cowboys wrap up minicamp on Thursday, their second-round pick from last month will likely continue his usual routine. He’ll do light rehab work with the team’s athletic trainers, and he’ll be on hand to see the bulk of practice.
In the three weeks since he was drafted by Dallas, all conversations about Jaylon Smith center around the devastating knee injury he suffered during his final college game. The Notre Dame linebacker tore his ACL and LCL during a Jan. 1 bowl game against Ohio State, and he suffered damage to his peroneal nerve in the process.
“We hung out a lot there,” said Elliott, the fourth overall pick in this year’s draft. “We were good friends before we played the Fiesta Bowl. Just kind of seeing one of my guys go down, a guy that has such a promising future, that’s always scary. I just went out there to give him some words of encouragement, make sure he was good.”
Smith, the Cowboys’ second-round pick, is still recovering from his knee injury, and head coach Jason Garrett reiterated Friday that there’s no set timetable for Smith’s return.

In the meantime, Smith has been continuing his regimen of strength and rehab work with the Cowboys’ athletic training staff, and he can see the progress.
“Day by day, the feeling is getting so much better,” he said. “I’m able to do a lot more. I’m actually running now, doing some actual football drills – linebacker drills and stuff like that.”
Smith is a mainstay at practices, working off to the side with the athletic training staff. They’re still just small steps in a long process, but he said that — from footwork drills to working on resistance cords — he’s able to see a difference in what he can do.
Points to you for thinking outside the box. It’s nice to know that Byron can play corner in a pinch, as we’ve seen over the course of his career. But I’d much rather give him time to settle in and use his athleticism at safety, rather than shuffle him off to a new spot. Orlando Scandrick and Anthony Brown give you a solid duo at corner. If it were up to me, I’d address the position responsibly in free agency and then try to spend a premium draft pick to shore things up for the future.
Three weeks from now, they’ll have to decide whether to add McFadden to the roster, and whether to send Smith to IR. Until then, they have more time to work with both players.
“So, really it will just be Jaylon and McFadden that we give them that shot to keep them alive and McFadden will actually return to practice full bore,” Jones said. “But Jaylon’s routine won’t change at the moment.”
James Hanna is also part of this conversation, but Jones said the fifth-year tight end has undergone a second surgery on his knee, which will send him to IR for the remainder of the season.
